Learning Liberal: A Look at SUNY Potsdam's Strong Liberal Arts Beginnings

19720427 Senate Report.png

The term "liberal arts" presents a rather ambiguous meaning, sometimes referring to an academic degree program, and sometimes referring to a school of thought that encompasses areas of knowledge ranging from history, language arts, philosophy, and science, among others.

Originally an institution that specialized in teacher and music education, SUNY Potsdam's history of liberal arts, dating back to the 1960's (when the SUNY establishment was still young) is short but very exciting.  This exhibit of archived material details the origins of the School of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Potsdam, first named the School of Liberal Studies, which was established in 1972.

Discover the School's impact on SUNY Potsdam's academic, social, and cultural atmosphere.

Sports and Recreation

hikers club 1925.jpg

Sports and recreational activities have always been an important source of enjoyment and stress relief for students at Potsdam. The earliest of which were the Basketball team and the Hikers Club.  The majority of sports teams that were developed after this time have been primarily developed by female students, due to the predominately female student body.  As enrollment by males rose, male and female teams were developed.
